ASSEMBLY LINE OF CHAMPIONS FROM CLTA

THE Chandigarh Lawn Tennis Association come into existence in September 1975. Since the Tennis Stadium Sector 10 Was leased to CLTA on I s’ January, 1987, the Association has created a first class playing infrastructure of 12 courts, of which 6 are floodlit, and a state of art gym, for its coaching programme for 450 children. Over the years CLTA has groomed a host of young champions. Here’s an introduction to them.

 

SUNIL KUMAR

By far the gem that sparkles the most amongst CLTA’s Rural area trainees. A member Indian Davis cup team, he created history when he marched to the national men’s’ hard court title in 1999. He was all of 16. He has participated in three junior grand slams, Wimbledon, Australia Open and the U. S. Open. His junior career as capped with the Asian junior crown in 2001.

He took part in International tennis Circuit in India and abroad. He had a few appearances in the National Men’s’ final. He has won 2 Men’s Nationals

VIJAYANT MALIK

Vijayant is Current CHART Trainee who was Junior National Champion U-16. He had represented India in Junior Davis Cup. He has won a few ITF junior tournaments. He is currently (2009), A member of Common Wealth probable for 2010 Games. He is taking part in International Tennis Circuit Tournaments.

SAHIBA CHADHA

Won the sub junior nationals in 1989-90. Runner up national hard court and member of the gold medal winning team at the SAF games in Colombo. Presently settled in USA after availing a tennis scholarship to the University of Lousiana.

VIKRANT CHADHA

Won the mini-junior nationals in 1989-90. A reserve member of India’s Davis Cup team in 1994. Played the U.S collegiate circuit after availing a tennis scholarship. Presently settled in USA.

ROBIN KUMAR

Robin won the Asian Sub-junior championship in 1994. also took the junior nationals crown in 1995. he has the distinction being Chandigarh schools seven years in a row. A product of the rural area scheme of the CLTA, Robin brought his vast competitive experience and held senior coach position with CLTA. He holds an ITF level-1coach certificate & USPTR & also attended I.T.F. level 2 coaching course. Robin now runs his own Tennis Academy in Chandigarh.

AMANJIT SINGH

Won the sub-junior nationals in 1999. Member of the ITF’s Asian junior touring team to Europe, he has to his credit several ITF junior championships. Till 2002 he was India’s number one junior player and hadleft for the USA on tennis scholarship. Presently settled down in USA.

SHRUTI DHAWAN

She was the first Indian woman to win ITF Women’s circuit masters crown at the age of 16 when she triumphed at Delhi in 1998. Member of the Indian fed cup and Asia cup women teams in 1999 and 2000 respectively. She had been ranked among the top 5 women in the country.

TUSHAR LIBERHAN

Won U-16 nationals in 2001 and selected to represent India in the world youth cup. He has also Played Many International Tournament as a member of the ITF’s Asian team. Winner of the junior national doubles title in 2002. Reached the finals of ITF junior world ranking tennis tournament grade-III held in New Delhi, January, 2002. Currently playing in ITF Men’s Circuit in India and abroad.

SAURABH SINGH

Saurabh Singh hasdwon an ITF grade-III tournament In January , 2002 as well as an ITF grade-IV tournament in Chandigarh in February, 2002. He has great exposure from many tournament played abroad. He had also won the boys Under-16 Doubles National.

CHATWINDER SINGH

A trainee under the rural scheme from Dhuri (Distt. Sangrur). Punjab, this 16-year-old was a finalist in an ITF junior tournament in Chandigarh. Semi-final in ITF Grade-III in Delhi, January 2002. Showed great promise and was physically among the fittest players in the junior circuit he had reached the finals at the ITF junior tournament at Dhaka. Bronze medalist in the national games, Hyderabad, 2002 in the men’s single & Doubles. He had gone to USA for studies.

AKSHAY VISHAL RAO

He was U-18 National Champions in the U-18. He had represented India in Junior Team competitions. He was member of ITF junior traveling team to Europe for tournaments.He went on tennis Scholarship to USA and now he is Graduate from Columbia University.

HARSIMRAN KAUR BEDI

She was ranked number 2 in under-16 (Singles) AITA ranking. Harsimran was also ranked among top 5 players under-18 (Singles) in AITA ranking. She won broze medal in Asian School games.

AMANJOT SINGH

He was the National Champion U-16 in 1999. Has left for studies in USA on a Tennis scholarship.

SANAM K. SINGH

A Former CLTA trainee is Member of Indian Davis Cup Team 2012, currently playing NCAA Division 1 Tennis representing University of Virginia. Highest world ranking achieved was number 4 in 2006. Winner of Asian Junior, Asia/Oceania Junior singles and doubles titles. Sanam was winner of ITF Men’s Futures. He had represented ITF teams both traveling to Europe and North America. He was member of junior Davis Cup team which had won Asia/ Oceania Group.

Birbal Wadhera

Birbal Wadhera (ranked India No. 15 during his playing days) and bronze medalist in all India inter Univ. was qualified ITF white Batch Umpire and had traveled worldwide as official in Davis Cup and Grand Slam events. Former senior coach with National Tennis Academy. Travelling coach with former Davis Cup player Divij Sharan. Now working full time as Head coach in a private Tennis Academy

Parveen Kumar

Parveen Kumar is ITF qualified White Badge umpire. He had traveled abroad for umpiring assignments in Davis Cup and Grand Slam events. Praveen is currently settled down in USA.
